Renowned cellist Janos Starker dies at 88

Grammy winning cellist Janos Starker passed away on Sunday at his home in Bloomington, Ind. at the age of 88, the LA Times reported.

The cellist had been in declining health.

Starker was born in Budapest and moved to the U.S. after War World II where he became a full-time concert cellist and a teacher, according to the BBC. He had spells with the Dallas Symphony, the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra and the Chicago Symphony.

He taught at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music where he held the title of Distinguished Professor.

Starker is best known for his rendition of Bach's Suites For Solo Cello 1-6 which earned him a Grammy Award in 1997.
