A former math teacher and basketball coach has been charged with rape and forcible sexual abuse after she resigned from her position at a Utah high school.

Courtney Louise Jarrell, 22, was charged Friday with first degree object rape and second degree forcible sexual abuse of a 17-year-old female student.

Court documents allege Jarrell had a sexual encounter with a Riverton High School student between February and March in which she touched the student's breasts and genitals while at Jarrell's Salt Lake City home.

"We immediately looked into it, and within hours of the complaint, she was suspended, and everything was turned over to Draper police," Jordan School District spokeswoman Sandra Riesgraf told the Salt Lake Tribune. "We felt that it was something that rose to that level [of police involvement]."

Jarrell, who is due in court May 16, had been with the district for less than a year.
