April 22 (UPI) -- Actor Simon Pegg, who plays chief engineer Scotty in the current cycle of Star Trek films directed by J.J. Abrams tweeted out a link to the first official clip from the upcoming "Star Trek Into Darkness."

In the film, set to be released May 17, Captain Kirk will lead a "manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction," according to IMDb.

Paramount Pictures requested that Abrams make the film in 3D. However, Abrams wanted to shoot the movie two dimensionally on film using IMAX cameras. Ultimately, the two compromised, and this film is the first ever to be filmed in the IMAX format and then converted into 3D in post production
