In the hours after the enormous explosion at a fertilizer plant in West, Texas, a particularly harrowing video popped up online of the moment of the blast.
A father and his young child -- later revealed as Derrick Hurtt and his 12-year-old daughter Khloey -- watched as the plant burned and then exploded in a blast that killed at least five people and injured more than 100.
Hurtt's video has now been viewed almost 3 million times on YouTube.
“We were going to shoot a little video of it and get out of there, and we just didn’t make it out in time," Hurtt told Today. "I’m pretty sure it lifted the truck off the ground."
In the video, Khloey can be heard pleading with her father to drive away, and that she couldn't hear. Khloey appeared on "Today" with her father, who said her ears were sore but she has her full hearing back.
He said he was approximately 250 to 300 yards away from the plant when it exploded.
"It was a pretty horrific scene, some of the injuries we saw,’’ he said. “There was probably double-digit people standing in front of me videoing that were closer than I was, and after the blast, they were nowhere to be seen.”
WARNING: Hurtt's video can be difficult to watch. Below that, his interview with Matt Lauer on Today.
