During an interview with Access Hollywood Live on Wednesday, Miley Cyrus's father, Billy Ray Cyrus, confessed that Liam Hemsworth asked for his permission to marry his daughter.

"He didn't have to, but he did," Billy Ray said. "He's got a really sweet side to him and he came in. They had the big rock."

According to Billy Ray, Hemsworth was very serious when he came to him with the big question. However, he decided to handle it with some good humor.

"They [were] all bashful about it and then said, 'Hey, look at this'. And Miley was showing that ring and Liam kind of [said] a little something to me -- it was kind of the professional question and I jokingly [said], 'Can I be in your brother's next movie?' And then I said, 'No, I'm joking'."

Later on, Billy Ray put all jokes aside and spoke to the young couple about the most important thing in a relationship.

"When they ask, 'Can we get married?' or 'We're getting married'... [I said], 'Hey, here's what I think -- you guys take care of each other, be good to each other and remember that right now, you're great friends. Don't ever lose that. That's the most important thing'."

Over the past couple of months there's been many rumors surrounding Miley's relationship to Hemsworth. When confronted about the gossip Billy Ray gave an honest but evasive answer.

"As far as when they get married or if they get married, that’s not my ball game…. They’ll figure that out themselves,” he said.

Billy Ray has granted several interviews over the past couple of days promoting his new book, “Hillbilly Heart: A Memoir,” which was released on Tuesday.
