Teacher: I was fired for giving a Bible to a student

Former Phillipsburg School District substitute teacher Walt Tutka filed a religious discrimination complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, the Express-Times reported Thursday, claiming that the school fired him for giving a Bible to a student.

According to Tutka, the incident occurred last October, when he used a Bible quote to reassure a student who fell last in line. "So the last will be first, and the first will be last," Tutka reportedly said.

When the student asked about the quote, Tutka gave him his personal Bible. According to WFMZ, the school board fired him in January.

"It is shocking that the school district has forced Walt to file a complaint with the EEOC for religious discrimination," said Hiram Sasser, director of a religious freedom organization co-representing Tutka. "All Walt did was respond to a student's intellectual curiosity and the school district suspended and then terminated him."

Sasser told the Express-Times that Tutka just wanted his job back, along with an apology "for all this craziness."
