April 12 (UPI) -- Michigan Democrats have turned up the heat on a push in the state to get the minimum wage raised from $7.40 to $10.

Legislation sponsored by State Reps. John Switalski of Warren and Rashida Tlaib of Detroit would require a minimum wage increase of $2.60 spread over three years was introduced in the State Legislature.

A similar bill was introduced by Democrats in the State Senate in February.

Both the Senate and the House are controlled by Republican majorities, neither they nor Republican Gov. Rick Snyder are likely to support the effort.

The Michigan minimum wage was last increased in 2008.
