Reddit user Naratto may have confessed to a murder using the popular "Confession Bear" meme, only to regret it once his fellow redditors took his post seriously.

"My sister had an abusive meth addict boyfriend," the meme, now deleted but saved by screenshot, said. "I killed him with his own drugs while he was unconscious and they ruled it an overdose."

Commenters weren't sure whether to take the whole thing as a joke -- "Meme/user confidentiality. It's a law," jested MrMoustachio -- or to take it seriously.

Under common "reddiquette," users will often post anonymously under throwaway accounts, whereas Naratto appeared to use his real account.

Other users managed to dig up Naratto's personal information -- since deleted by moderators -- including military rank, his middle name, and information about where he lived. At least one person allegedly submitted a tip to the FBI.

Before disappearing entirely Naretto posted twice more, trying to brush his confession off as a joke, but then deleted his account.

"If I had a dollar every time someone took me seriously on the internet, I would be able to retire from today alone," he wrote.

So far, no word on whether the FBI -- or Reddit's quite capable diggers -- have discovered the truth behind the post yet.
