April 5 (UPI) -- When Michelle Wie burst onto the golf scene a decade ago as a 13-year-old phenom, becoming the youngest player to make the cut for an LGPA tournament, expectations for her career were sky high.

Wie has yet to win any of the majors, but it seems like the person most offended by any of her failures isn't Wie herself, but LGPA legend Annika Sorenstam.

"What I see now is that the talent that we all thought would be there is not there," Sorenstam told Golf Magazine. "There was a time when the LPGA really needed her. I thought she had a lot to bring to the table. Now she's one out of many."

Far from being offended by Sorenstam's comments, Wie said she hasn't read them. Wie told reporters Sorenstam had apologized, saying she was misquoted.

"I thought that was really nice of her to reach out to me," Wie said.

Sorenstam's criticism comes from Wie's decision to play against men, where her goal was simply to make the cut, rather than against women, where she could clearly compete.

Over her 10-year career, Wie has won two LGPA tournaments, but none of the majors. Sorenstam has won 10 in her years on the tour.

Hall of Famer JoAnne Carner, however, said Sorenstam was onto something.

"Confidence comes from winning," Carner said. "If you are entering a men's tournament, you are not entering to win. It's a totally different attitude. She finally gets in a women's tournament and you are not used to being in the hunt."

Even as Wie's star loses its luster, another young player is rising through the ranks of the women's tour: 15-year-old Lydia Ko, the top-ranked amateur. She will be paired with Wie at the Kraft Nabisco Championship this week.
