As many as 62 inmates at the Twin Towers Jail in Los Angeles County were involved in a racially-charged fight Tuesday.

Four inmates required medical treatment after the brawl, which broke out at 12:10 p.m. in the third-floor recreation area of the jail. It took deputies 90 seconds to break up the fight using rubber bullets and gas.

"We cannot say how many of the inmates were exactly involved, but 62 were in the area at the time," said sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore, to the Los Angeles Times.

Whitmore said the fight was between black and Latino inmates, and charges would be forthcoming once culprits were identified.

The Los Angeles County jail system is the largest in the country and houses between 18,000 and 19,000 inmates daily.
