According to the WFAA, Macy's current catalog, which was mailed to hundreds of people across the country, has a major pricing error: it listed a 14-karat gold necklace worth $1500 for $47 and not the correct price of $479.
The deal, which was already labeled as a "Super Buy," became an even better buy thanks to the typo. According to catalog recipient Robert Bernard, customers purchased the entire inventory at the Macy's in Collin Creek Mall in Plano, TX, where he unsuccessfully tried to purchase two necklaces.
Not willing to let go of the deal, Bernard ordered the two necklaces and asked for them to be shipped to his home. However, Macy's employees realized their mistake before he ever got them, and explained the situation in a message they left on his answering machine.
"This item has the wrong price for $47," a Macy's employee said in Bernard's voicemail. "The correct price is $479 dollars and because of that pricing error, your order has been canceled and I apologize."
Bernard told News 8 he was upset that Macy's simply offered a refund for their mistake.
"I'm very, very bothered by it because I don't want anybody else to feel the way I feel," Bernard said.
When contacted by the network, a Macy's spokeswoman admitted to the mistake and said she was "sorry" Bernard wasn't as fortunate as many of the customers who got to buy the necklace at $47.
"When the mistake was caught, signage did go up in the fine jewelry department and on store doors alerting customers that a mistake had been made," Beth Charlton, Macy's spokeswoman wrote in an e-mail to News 8. "For those customers who bought the necklace at the $47 price, they were fortunate. For the gentleman you spoke with, he was not so fortunate. We are sincerely sorry he was disappointed and unable to buy the necklace at the $47 price for his wife."
