The Mexican Olympic Committee announced Thursday that Sydney Olympic Games weightlifting gold medalist Soraya Jimenez died of a heart attack at age 35.
According to the Global Post, Jimenez died at her home in Mexico.
"Soraya was the first Mexican athlete to win a gold medal during the debut of female weightlifting at the Sydney Olympic Games in 2000," the committee said in a statement.
Jimenez, who took home the gold in Sydney's Olympic Games for the women's 58 kilogram category, was the first Mexican woman to win an Olympic gold medal. She lifted a total of 497 pounds.
