March 29 (UPI) -- A 1-year-old Richmond boy who was sitting on the floor of an apartment was struck by a bullet fragment from a shooting taking place in the city's Iron Triangle on Thursday.

The Contra Costa Times reports the boy was taken to the Children's Hospital Oakland with a severe neck injury.

"Doctors removed a fragment of a bullet from the child's neck," Capt. Mark Gagan said Thursday afternoon. "It was not an entire projectile."

Police said the bullet probably came from a shooting on the western edge of the city's Iron Triangle, in which over 75 people were involved.

The boy was struck by a lost bullet that hit a building in Saint John's Apartments at 121 West Macdonald Ave. in Richmond where he was being cared for by his grandparents. The unidentified shooter was allegedly firing at a man outside the building.

Richmond police Chief Chris Magnus said he was "sickened" about the situation adding that the police department is "putting everything [it has] into this case."

"You have a 1-year-old child that's literally in the arms of the grandparents there feeding him, and bullets come into the house," Magnus said. "I am really angry about this. I am sickened. I am appalled."

Police later said the child's condition was less critical than originally thought and that he was improving and stable. He was to be kept in the hospital for at least one night to be monitored.

According to the Examiner, there has been no motive associated with the shooting and a $25,000 reward has been offered for information leading to an arrest.
