According to the San Francisco Chronicle, Nadine Hairston, a third grader at Mary E. Silveira Elementary School in San Rafael, Calif., was sitting outside the university's Lawrence Hall of Science Tuesday morning when a 20-inch crossbow bolt found its way into her thigh.
Nadine had to undergo surgery after the incident. Alicia Hairston, Nadine's mom, said the girl sang songs with her teacher to stay calm while on her way to the Children's Hospital Oakland.
Investigators are tracing the arrow's trajectory to try to determine where it came from, said Berkeley Police Capt. Steven Roderick.
