NBC News reports Christopher Stanlane, 34, was reportedly polishing his gun when it fired unexpectedly hitting his son, Christopher Jr., in the head and killing him almost instantly.
According to reports, Stanlane immediately put the gun down and moved his 8-year-old daughter, who was also in the room but was unharmed, to another room.
Stanlane's wife called 911, but by the time paramedics arrived at the scene Christopher Jr. had already passed away and was pronounced dead by paramedics at their house in Fairmont.
The Robeson County Prosecutor has not yet declared if charges will filed against Stanlane.
