The Supreme Court of the United States heard arguments for and against the constitutionality of Proposition 8, the California law prohibiting same-sex marriage.

The case to maintain the law was argued by Charles Cooper, on behalf of Dennis Hollingsworth, the leader of Proposition 8 supporter The case to uphold the lower court ruling and strike the law was argued by Ted Olson and Donald Verrilli, on behalf of plaintiffs Kristin Perry and Sandra Stier, a married couple, and partners Jeff Zarillo and Paul Katami.
