Colorado prisons chief murdered at home

March 20 (UPI) -- Executive Director Tom Clements of the Colorado Department of Corrections was shot and killed as he answered the door to his home around 8:30 pm Tuesday night. A family member in the house called 911, according to El Paso County Sheriff's Lt. Jeff Kramer.

Search dogs were called to the scene and neighbors are being interviewed. Police have no suspect at this time but say the neighborhood is not in any danger. CBS Denver reported that security has been increased at the governor's mansion and for top government officials.

Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper is scheduled Wednesday to sign legislation to expand background checks on gun buyers and limit the size of ammunition magazines that may be sold. Last summer, the Colorado town of Aurora had a gunman open fire on a movie theater and fatally shot 12 people.

Clements, 58, was considered by Hickenlooper to be an important ally. In an email to Department of Corrections employees notifying them of the killing, Gov. Hickenlooper described Clements as "unfailingly kind and thoughtful."

Hickenlooper ordered that all flags lowered to half-staff Wednesday on public buildings statewide in memory of Clements. He is survived by his wife, Lisa, along with two daughters.
