Lilith Fair alum Michelle Shocked shocks SF audience with anti-gay rant

In what SFist is calling "career suicide," alt-folk singer and born-again Christian Michelle Shocked cleared out Yoshi's San Francisco on Sunday after launching into an anti-gay rant during her second set.

“You can go on Twitter and say Michelle Shocked said ‘God hates f*gs,’" the 51-year-old musician suddenly said from the stage. She went on to condemn gay marriage, recite Bible verses and express support for California's Proposition 8, a particularly surprising turn for a performer who has described herself has a liberal feminist.

According to the New York Daily News, the androgynous Shocked converted to Christianity in the 1990s, but told reporters as recently as 2008 that she "would be honored" to be called an "honorary lesbian."

But in 2011 she said, “Who drafted me as a gay icon? You are looking at the world’s greatest homophobe. Ask God what He thinks.”

Yoshi's operator, a gay man, stepped on stage to cancel the performance. The venue tweeted later that they would never be welcome again.

A number of successive venues have canceled upcoming performances of Shocked's tour. Evanston, Ill., club Space wrote on its Facebook page that it was unwilling to host Shocked after her "ugly rant."

Shocked, best known for her 1988 album "Short Sharp Shocked," previously toured with women's music festival Lilith Fair.
