A California mortuary admitted to burying a woman in the wrong casket Monday after the deceased's husband complained the woman in the casket at the viewing wasn't his wife.

Officials at Simpson's Mortuary in Inglewood, near Los Angeles, admitted to a mix-up after Evans Davidson, 73, complained the woman at his wife's viewing was not, in fact, Darlene Davidson.

"I was pretty certain it wasn't my wife -- unless she did some awful changing," Davidson told NBC Los Angeles.

The mortuary initially claimed the body was indeed Darlene Davidson, but she looked different because she was embalmed. But Evans Davidson was sure.

"It wasn't my wife and I knew it," he said.

Eventually, the mortuary called him, admitting a "body switch" might have happened. When another woman complained -- "a lady jumping up and down saying this not her mother," according to what the mortuary told Davidson -- Simpson's offered to exhume the body and pay all expenses for proper services for both families.

A spokesman for Simpson's, Dr. Reginald Black, said the wrong woman had been buried in Darlene Davidson's grave.

"We have standards and systems in place to insure as much as we can that these type of things don’t happen; however, we are human beings and we can make mistakes," Black said.
