Police and witnesses saw what happened and they linked arms to form a human chain that could hold tight. With the two police officers at the front, they were able to grab the boy and throw him onto shore, MSN reported.
The boy was carried to the beach unconscious and then resuscitated. His father, Shane McQuoid said Joshua was recovering both physically and mentally from the experience. He said the boy told him he felt like he was inside a washing machine.
McQuoid told Radio New Zealand he was very thankful to "each and every person" who helped pull Joshua out alive.
