Miami police have begun enforcing a curfew for teens younger than 17 while insisting the action was not inresponse to an uptick in violence.

According to the Miami Herald, the police say the reasoning behind enforcing the curfew has to do with the school calendar.

“It’s normally done when kids are out of school, and we’ve done it before... usually during the summer months,” said Miami Police Department spokesman Willie Moreno.

“That’s when kids tend to stay out later and later.”

Miami-Dade students will soon be on spring break.

The Juvenile Curfew Ordinance covers children under the age of 17, forbidding them to be out alone in Miami-Dade county between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m., Sunday through Thursday. The curfew begins at midnight on Fridays and Saturdays.
