John Galliano, primed for his first New York Fashion Week comeback with Oscar de la Renta, is facing a new round of criticism for his choice of wardrobe.

The disgraced designer, fired from Dior and convicted for anti-Semitism in 2011, emerged from a Manhattan townhouse Tuesday wearing an outfit the New York Post interpreted as making a mockery of Hasidic Jews.

"SHMUCK," ran The New York Post's headline, " Jew-bash designer's costume mocks faithful." The Post said that Galliano, whose "ill-advised" outfit included a long jacket, hat and peyos-like curls, had once again angered the city's Jewish community.

“He’s trying to embarrass people in the Jewish community and make money on clothes [while] dressed like people he has insulted,” Williamsburg community leader Isaac Abraham told the paper.

"Your accusations are not at all correct," Galliano’s rep responded.

The Anti-Defamation League agreed, defending Galliano's "eccentric" attire in a press release.

"The New York Post story is a ridiculous, absurd distortion," ADL’s Abraham Foxman said. "There is no truth to their accusation that John Galliano was dressed in Hasidic garb. ... Hasidim do not wear fedora hats, pinstripe pants, blue jackets or an ascot tie."

He continued:

This is John Galliano being John Galliano. His dress is always eccentric and his hair is always worn long. This is, at the very least, ignorance on the part of the reporters and editors at the Post, or, at worst, a deliberate, malicious distortion in an effort to sell newspapers.

For the past year and a half, Mr. Galliano has been on a pilgrimage to learn from and grow from his mistakes. Now people are trying to distort and destroy him. He has spent hours with me and with others in the European Jewish community, including rabbis and Holocaust scholars, in an effort to better understand himself and to learn from his past mistakes. He is trying very hard to atone.

Fashion blog The Cut argued that "Galliano has been wearing this exact outfit for ages," noting that the designers curls and long jackets inspired a menswear collection in 2012.

Galliano's troubles began in 2011, when a viral video surfaced of the designer yelling "I love Hitler" and making anti-Semitic remarks to diners at a Parisian restaurant.
