Israeli police detained ten women at the Western Wall today for wearing prayer shawls, including Susan Silverman, Sarah Silverman's sister. Susan Silverman is a reform rabbi based in Jerusalem with her 17-year-old daughter Hallel. Susan, @rabbisusan, and her daughter, @purplelettuce95 are shown here via Twitter:
A protest formed on Monday at the Western Wall against Orthodox control over the holy site. Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has called for compromise to allow non-orthodox women to pray at the site. The ten women were detained Monday in part for wearing traditionally male-style prayer shawls known as tallitot.
Silverman said that they were among more than 100 women who regularly meet there along with the "Women of the Wall." The women are asking to be able to pray at the Western Wall for an hour every month. Police spokesperson Micky Rosenfeld said the women had acted "against regulations set by the High Court."
