New users attempting to download the Vine app from the Apple App Store will see a message pop up demanding confirmation that users are 17 or older.

Vine, launched last month, allows users to create six-second videos that loop and repeat similar to GIF files with audio. Users can then share those videos with other people and other websites including Twitter.

A new age restriction prompt appeared Wednesday bundled into an update that also tackled bug fixes and improvements. In addition to asking for users' ages, the update allows users to report or block other profiles.

The app was hit with a substantial number of users uploading pornographic videos to the new social network. Vine attempted to block obviously racy hashtags like #porn and #sex, but videos slipped through the cracks, even landing in featured positions.

A Twitter spokesperson previously told NBC News that the company is "in the process of changing how users find and view sensitive content" and that it is "experimenting with a number of approaches." The new age restriction seems to be the first major step in that process.
