U.S. Customs seized more than $3.4 million worth of counterfeit items, including fake Super Bowl jerseys made by somebody trying to cash in on the biggest sports moment of the year.

Officials found more than 60,000 counterfeit items at the express consignment hubs of DHL outside Cincinnati and UPS in Louisville over the past nine days, the Cincinnati Business Courier reported.

"This counterfeit merchandise hurts consumers by being substandard and it hurts the U.S. economy, as well,” said William Ferrara, Customer and Border Protection acting director of field operations in Chicago. “Also federal investigations have shown that some of these counterfeiting organizations are linked to other criminal enterprises.”
