The Senate Judiciary Committee is holding its first hearing of the new session on ways to reduce gun violence. Among those testifying are NRA vice president Wayne LaPierre and former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, who was shot in the head in a Safeway parking lot in Tucson, Ariz., in January 2010.

Senator Patrick Leahy, D, V.T., the committee chairman, issued a strong statement pressing for movement on the issue of 'commonsense reform' to come out of today's hearing. Also present will be Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D, Calif., who is behind the latest push for an assault weapons ban.
