Jan. 28 (UPI) -- "Mean Girls," 2004's biting, sarcastic send up of high school hierarchies, might return in musical form. Just before winning a Screen Actors Guild Award for "30 Rock," Tina Fey told E! News' that a stage adaptation of the hit comedy was in the works.

"Maybe! We want to. I would love to," Fey told Giuliana Rancic on the red carpet. "I'm trying to develop it with my husband, who does all the music for "30 Rock" and I think Paramount's on board."

Fey told MTV in 2007 that her husband, composer Jeff Richmond, had already written songs for the musical "Mean Girls."

"We've had the opportunity to meet with producers on it but we never have. ["Mean Girls"] actually belongs to Paramount so we don't really own it, but whatever happens we'd like to be involved," Fey said.

She had no doubt then that "Mean Girls" would translate to the stage.

"I thought the movie in some ways mostly appealed to young girls and gay men, and I feel like that could be a recipe for success on Broadway," she said.
