In a social media cry heard round the world, Australian sandwich-lover Matt Corby posted a photo to Subway's Facebook page Tuesday demanding to know why the fast-food company had failed to make him a 12-inch (foot-long) sandwich as advertised.
"Subway pls respond," Corby asked in the post, which included a photo of the offending sandwich positioned beneath a measuring tape. The "foot-long" sandwich fell short by one inch. Corby's post caught the attention of Subway fans around the world, garnering nearly 125,000 likes and more than 5,000 comments.
Here's Subway's response (via The Australian):
Hi, Matt. Thanks for writing. Looking at this photo, this bread is not baked to our standards. We have policies in place to ensure that our fresh baked bread is consistent and has the same great taste no matter which Subway restaurant around the world you visit. We value your feedback and want to thank you again for being a fan.
Subway's Facebook page has since been flooded with questions from hungry food crusaders demanding answers.
So what happened here?
Redditor and "frequent Subway eater" pizzabash offered one explanation:
"Hi frequent subway eater with a friend who works there. Typically when a sub is toasted it loses around an inch a cold sub should be your full 12 inches," pizzabash said.
"I've worked at subway for 1.5 years... Never seen this happen. Odds are the person who baked the bread didn't let it proof or bake long enough," claimed another.
