When Jennifer Lawrence won a Golden Globe for 'Best Actress in a Comedy' last Sunday, the actress' acceptance speech wasn't well received by many as it was misunderstood.

"What does it say? I beat Meryl!," Lawrence said as soon as she got the award in what many people thought to be a reference to the also nominated Meryl Streep, but as we learned Monday, it wasn't. The phrase was actually a quote from the 1996 film, "The First Wives Club."

"It was a quote from 'First Wives Club,'" Lawrence told David Letterman Tuesday night. "Bette Midler was talking about a Globe, I can't believe nobody's ever done it before, where she says 'Look what it says, it says I beat Meryl.'" Later on adding "I said it and I had no idea Lindsay Lohan would take it to the Twitterverse."

The Hunger Games star was referring to Lohan's tweet about her speech.

When Letterman asked Lawrence what she though about the "dopes" who didn't get the joke, she responded, "I wanted to make a public statement like, 'Hey Idiots its a quote from a movie and it's Meryl Streep."
