Jan. 9 (UPI) -- ESPN has apologized for comments made by veteran sportscaster Brent Musburger, who could barely contain his excitement when he saw Katherine Webb, Miss Alabama USA 2012 and Alabama quarterback A.J. McCarron's girlfriend, watching the BCS Championship game from the stands Monday night.

Network rep Mike Soltys said in a tweet that while Musburger's leering might have been over the top, the network wanted to focus on "interesting storylines":

Have been asked on focus on @_KatherineWebb in BCS: We always try to capture interesting storylines and the relationship between an Auburn grad who is Miss Alabama and the current Alabama quarterback certainly met that test.

However, we apologize that the commentary in this instance went too far and Brent understands that.

"Well, I tell you, you quarterbacks, you get all the good-looking women. What a beautiful woman, whoa!" Musburger exclaimed Monday when ESPN cameras panned to Webb.

"So if you're a youngster at Alabama, start getting the football out and throw it around the backyard with pops," he said.

Some of the game's watchers found Musburger's enthusiasm creepy and uncomfortable.

But Webb doesn't think an apology was necessary.

"I think the media has been really unfair to him," Webb said of Musburger on the "Today" show Wednesday. "I don't think that I need an apology."

As we wrote yesterday, Webb's beauty also caught the attention of social media users like Arizona Cardinals defensive end Darnell Dockett, who invited her to a strip club after the game, and Georgia quarterback Aaron Murray. Donald Trump invited Webb to judge the Miss USA pageant.
