Speaking with HuffPost Live Wednesday, Gingrich joined the call for more guns by suggesting "school administrators should be trained and should have arms that are available under lock and key."
He also brushed aside the growing momentum for stricter laws on weapons and ammunition.
"More gun control might be good PR, it might make people feel better," he said, but even with stonger laws, "there are thousands of people killed annually by criminals who apparently don't pay attention to gun control."
Gingrich joins Texas Rep. Louie Gohmert, Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell, Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam, Texas Gov. Rick Perry and former Secretary of Education Bill Bennett, who have all spoken out in favor of arming school staff since the shootings at Newtown.
