Australian police accuse Apple Maps of causing 'life threatening' travel issues

Police from the Australian state of Victoria say that misleading Apple Maps directions have taken motorists "off the beaten track," stranding them about 43 miles away from their chosen destination of Mildura. According to the report, Apple Maps is directing people to the middle of Murray-Sunset National Park in summer, where temperatures have recently been as high as 115 degrees Fahrenheit.

According to the Victorian police, some drivers have been stranded in the middle of Australian bush country -- think poisonous insects, no shade, no water -- "and have walked long distances through dangerous terrain to get phone reception."

Apple fired the designer of their much-maligned maps service in late November.
