"You think your world is safe. It is an illusion, a comforting lie told to protect you."

So begins the destruction-heavy, ominous teaser trailer for Star Trek: Into Darkness, the sequel to the 2009 film directed by J.J. Abrams and starring Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto.

The two stars, as Kirk and Spock, are again joined by castmates Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, Anton Yelchin, Simon Pegg and John Cho.

Benedict Cumberbatch, who narrates the trailer, plays the movie's big bad, rumored to be either long-time Trek villain Khan or Gary Mitchell, a former friend of Kirk who turns corrupt.

The official synopsis from Paramount for the film:

In Summer 2013, pioneering director J.J. Abrams will deliver an explosive action thriller that takes "Star Trek Into Darkness."

When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis.

With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction.

As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.

The poster looking somewhat Dark Knight-ish and featuring Benedict Cumberbatch, sets a somber tone for the sequel.
