Carrie Underwood will be joining the von Trapp family in the NBC's upcoming live Sound of Music broadcast early next year.

Underwood, a five-time Grammy winner and the fourth season victor of American Idol will star as Maria von Trapp, the governess-turned-beloved stepmother of a band of singing Austrians.

NBC announced the upcoming production, due out sometime near the holidays in 2013. Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, who produced the film versions of Chicago and Hairspray and currently produce the musical TV show Smash.

The Sound of Music is of course based on the true story of Maria and her family, who toured as the Trapp Family Singers. The Broadway musical, written by Richard Rogers and Oscar Hammerstein, debuted in 1959, but truly became monumental with the 1965 film version starring Julie Andrews.

Whenever a beloved show is revived, detractors inevitably come out of the woodwork to tear down the young stars trying to remake the classic for a new audience.

Whether Underwood will hold her own as she steps into Andrews's shoes remains to be seen, but fortunately for us, we've already got a preview of how she might do.
