WATCH: Stunning video of birth and death of Superstorm Sandy

NASA's GOES observatory captured a stunning time-lapse video of Hurricane Sandy's entire lifespan, as it gathers and grows, tracking north to wreak havoc on the eastern United States.

From above, it's graceful, even peaceful, so unlike the death and destruction it wrought on land and sea.

Sandy, seen in this gorgeous, stunning time-lapse video captured by NASA's geosynchronous orbit observatory, GOES-13, formed and ultimately collapsed between October 21 through October 31.

Sandy was a tropical storm through the Caribbean, turning into a Category 1 hurricane by the time it made landfall near Atlantic City, New Jersey. At it's biggest, the storm spanned more than 1,000 miles, drowning the coastline in an historic storm surge, knocking out power for millions, and killing at least 137 people.
