Clearly riding the fairy-tale mash-up wave so popular with filmmakers these days is "Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters," which stars Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton as vengeful grown-up versions of the famed storybook siblings.

Helmed by Norwegian director Tommy Wirkola, the R-rated "Hansel and Gretel" reimagines the brother and sister duo as gun-toting action heroes hell bent on ridding the world of witches like the one that once entrapped them.

Here's the official synopsis:

Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters" takes place 15 years after the siblings' incident at the gingerbread house. The two are now specialized bounty hunters looking to put down the cackling black-hat set.

The film, originally slated to open in March of 2013, was pushed forward to a January release date -- usually a signal that the studio has little faith in the movie.
