Paul Thomas Anderson’s “The Master” stars Philip Seymour Hoffman as Lancaster Dodd, the charismatic leader and prophet of a cryptic post-war religious organization called The Cause that bears a close resemblance to L. Ron Hubbard’s Church of Scientology.

Joaquin Phoenix plays drifter and Dodd follower Freddie Quell as he begins to question the belief system of his newly adopted religion.

The trailer also features a creepy-sounding score by Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood.

Amy Adams and Laura Dern also star.

“The Master” opens in October.
