May 30 (UPI) -- In a season full of blockbuster genre films like ‘The Avengers,’ ‘Prometheus’ and the spectacularly named ‘Abe Lincoln: Vampire Hunter,’ Kristen Stewart, Charlize Theron and Chris Hemsworth bring us ‘Snow White and the Huntsman,’ an edgier take on the beloved Brothers Grimm fairy tale.

In this version, Charlize Theron’s evil Queen Ravenna sends a huntsman to kill Snow White, played by Kristen Stewart, in a bid to ensure she remains the ‘fairest one of all.’ The huntsman, played by Chris Hemsworth, instead helps Snow White lead a horde of fantastical warriors into a battle of good versus evil.

Judging by the dimly-lit trailer, this is no Walt Disney movie.

Best known for her role as a bumbling, vampire-loving adolescent in that other fantasy movie, Kristen Stewart’s version of Snow White wields a sword, wears armour and is too beset by the weight of her problems to smile much.

Stewart has brought that same goth-tomboy look and attitude to movie screenings, even changing into sneakers at the London premiere.

“Kristen Stewart is not an obvious choice for Snow White, given her habitual expression of discomfort while striking conventional feminine poses—both in movies and on red carpets,” David Edelstein writes in New York Magazine.

“That’s why, of course, she’s right for this Snow White, imprisoned in a tower during puberty and with no regard for her looks: She has integrity, inner beauty,” Edelstein says.

Stewart wore an androgynous black suit to a Los Angeles screening of the film.

Stewart elaborated on her notoriously uneasy personality at premieres in a sit-down with Interview magazine:

"I think people are used to seeing actors be wide open and desperately giving of themselves, and while I do that on a movie set as much as I can, it's so unnatural for me to do it on television, in interviews, in anything like that. I also don't find that my process as an actor is really anyone else's business."

Charlize Theron, also seen in a darker look at the 'Snow White' London premiere, enjoyed channeling her evil side to play Queen Ravenna.

"I know that I'm very attracted to characters who don't necessarily make it easy to be loved either," Theron told Interview. "I am definitely attracted to characters that make you work for it. They don't just roll over." .

‘Snow White’ costume designer Colleen Atwood has worked on a series of fantasy films from ‘Edward Scissorhands’ to ‘Mars Attacks.’ Atwood’s designs brought a sinister intricacy to the film’s costuming and especially to Queen Ravenna's outfits.

According to the Washington Post, Atwood used a myriad of non-traditional materials to make Queen Ravenna’s costumes, from Thai beetle wings to rooster feathers to chain mail.

“In a way, these dresses were like torture devices for Ravenna," Theron said.

"I love that because I feel like Ravenna was, in a way, more torturous toward herself than to the people she was killing.”

‘Snow White and the Huntsman’ opens June 1.
