LAHORE, Pakistan (UPI Next) -- Popular Pakistani politician and former cricket star Imran Khan received a head wound at a campaign event and was hospitalized May 7, but is not in danger, according to a hospital official.

Khan was injured after falling from an elevator taking him to a stage nearly 18 feet high at an election rally in Lahore.  While on the way up to the stage, two guards with Khanlost their balance and all three fell. Khan was knocked unconscious and rushed to nearby Shaukat Khanum Memorial Hospital – which he founded.

Dr. Faisal Sultan, the hospital’s CEO, told reporters Khan "is out of danger.”

“We have stitched his wounds and are conducting further tests," Sultan said.

A spokesman for Khan’s Pakistan Tehrik e Insaf party, Shafqat Mehmood, hadearlier told UPI Next that Khan would resume participating in rallies in coming days.

The incident has triggered a wave of concern about Khan’s health and ability to complete the election among PTI’s supporters across the country, and hundreds of Khan’s supporters gathered outside the hospital.
