LAHORE, Pakistan, May 2 (UPI Next) – Convicted Indian spy Sarabjit Singh, who had been condemned to a death sentence, has succumbed to wounds he suffered in a prison attack and died, his lawyer, Awais Sheikh said early May 2.

Singh was sentenced to death by Pakistani courts in 1991 for spying and killing 14 people in four bomb blasts in 1990.

Sheikh told UPI Next at around 2:45 a.m. May 2 that Singh had “died of critical head injury a couple of hours ago.” Singh was at the Jinnah Hospital, outside the jail.

Singh was attacked by fellow inmates on April 26 and was admitted to the hospital with serious head injuries. Meanwhile, his sister, wife and two daughters came from India to see him in the hospital and returned home the morning of May 1.

His sister, Dalbir Kaur, told reporters at the hospital before she left, “I will meet my country’s leaders and will urge them to press Pakistan for Sarabjit’s treatment in India or somewhere else.”
