GENEVA, Switzerland, July 31 (UPI) -- The World Health Organization issued an update regarding the deadly outbreak of Ebola in West Africa.

A total of 1,323 people have been infected in Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria and Sierra Leone as of July 27. WHO noted that 729 of those infected people have died.

"The distribution and classification of the cases are as follows: Guinea, 460 cases (336 confirmed, 109 probable, and 15 suspected) including 339 deaths; Liberia, 329 cases (100 confirmed, 128 probable, and 101 suspected) including 156 deaths; Nigeria, 1 case (1 probable who died); and Sierra Leone, 533 cases (473 confirmed, 38 probable, and 22 suspected) including 233 deaths."

The Ebola virus is spread by close contact and typically kills up to 90 percent of its victims. There is no known cure or antivirus.

In response to the outbreak, Liberia announced this week it has closed all of the country's schools and closed some of the country's border crossings. Sierra Leone declared a national health emergency and established a presidential task force to take steps to stem the contagion.

The Peace Corps announced on Wednesday the temporary closure of its programs in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone "due to the increasing spread of the Ebola virus."
