BYRON BAY, Australia, Sept. 8 (UPI) -- A swimmer is dead after being attacked by a shark at Clarkes Beach near Byron Bay, New South Wales. The attack happened on an unpatrolled part of the beach.
The man, in his 50's was pulled out of the water, after a shark was reportedly seen in the area.

Paramedics said the bite was above the knee and that "it was a fatal bite with major blood loss. He probably died in the water because there was no blood loss on the beach." He also added there was a lot of blood in the water.
The type of shark that attacked the man is not yet known.
