May 25 (UPI) -- Gunmen opened fire on a police officer Thursday, killing the 28-year-old in the northern Sinai Peninsula, Egyptian security officials said.

"Unknown gunmen stopped a taxi carrying a police officer and his family in the North Sinai city of Al-Arish," a law enforcement official told Turkey's Anadolu Agency. "They shot the police officer repeatedly, killing him instantly, before fleeing the scene."
