April 10 (UPI) -- Mexico's Attorney General's Office, or PGR, said Italian authorities arrested former Tamaulipas Gov. Tomás Jesús Yarrington Ruvalcaba, who is accused of corruption.

The PGR said Yarrington Ruvalcaba's arrest was made through Interpol issuing a Red Notice after Mexico's Second District Court of Federal Criminal Proceedings in Tamaulipas issued an arrest warrant.

"It is expected that in the coming days he will be repatriated to our country by this office, in coordination with the authorities of the government of Italy," the PGR said in a statement on Sunday.

Mexican outlets reported Italian authorities arrested Yarrington Ruvalcaba in Florence. He is accused of money laundering and involvement in organized crime, mainly by receiving bribes from drug cartels, during his 1999 to 2004 term.
