A total of six suicide bombers carried out the attacks, with groups of three targeting both the Ghouta and Mahatta districts.

Gen. Hassan Daaboul, the head of Homs' military intelligence, was reported as one of the victims who died in one of the attacks.

Radical group Tahrir al-Sham claimed responsibility for the bombings, saying five of its fighters took part in the attacks and killed 40 Syrian regime officers including Daaboul.

Tahrir al-Sham was formed when members of the group Jabhat Fateh al-Sham broke ties with al-Qaeda.
