By Andrew V. Pestano

Jan. 18 (UPI) -- A student at the American School of the Northeast in the city of Monterrey, Mexico, shot a teacher and another student before also shooting himself.

Aldo Fasci Zuazua, spokesman for the Nuevo León Security Coordination Group, said the student used a .22 caliber firearm in the shooting, and that he, the other student and the teacher are all in serious condition.

Pictures taken inside the high school classroom where the shooting occurred that circulated on social media appear to show both students dead, but Fasci Zuazua said the victims "have vital signs but are in extremely grave" condition.

El Universal reported Wednesday's incident is the first known school shooting in Nuevo León.

Fasci Zuazua said the school shooting, which was recorded on video, was unprecedented in Nuevo León, adding that school and police officials began carrying out backpack checks some years ago but stopped due to the objections of parents. He said backpack checks could resume.

The school, called the Colegio Americano del Noreste in Spanish, is a bi-lingual school that was established in 1984.
