"Based on provisional results from the investigation, it appears that there were plans to carry out an attack somewhere in Belgium," the federal prosecution office said in a statement.

Sky News reports that the French version of the statement indicated that multiple attacks were being planned.

A judge will determine on Saturday whether the two men will be detained beyond 24 hours.

No weapons or explosives were found during the searches and the prosecution office said that there is "no connection" with the airport and and Metro station bombings in Brussels on March 22, according to CNN.

The Islamic State claimed responsibility for both attacks, which killed a total of 32 people.

Belgium is on a security alert level three out of four, which indicates a "possible and probable" threat. The country increased security before its national holiday on July 21 following the truck attack in Nice, France which killed 84 people on Bastille Day.
