Death toll in China from Typhoon Nepartak increases to 10 dead, 11 missing

BEIJING, July 12 (UPI) -- The death toll in China from Typhoon Nepartak increased on Monday to at least 10 people killed, while 11 others were missing in the Fujian province.

About 213,000 people were displaced in the Fujian province due to the landfall of Nepartak, the first typhoon of the season.

The typhoon caused an estimated $320 million in damages, up from a previous estimate of $128.7 million.

Nepartak first struck Taiwan on Friday, killing two people and injuring 72 with sustained winds of about 118 mph and wind gusts of 145 mph. The typhoon weakened into a strong tropical storm after making landfall in Fujian on Saturday. It decreased to a tropical depression early Sunday.

The typhoon destroyed nearly 1,900 homes, and nearly 40,000 acres of crops were damaged while nearly 4,000 acres were destroyed.
