SPRINAGAR, India, July 11 (UPI) -- A police officer in Kashmir drowned when an angry mob allegedly pushed his car into a river, police said.
There are differing accounts of the drowning, police said Sunday. Some witnesses said the officer's vehicle wasn't pushed into the river, but he instead swerved to dodge rocks being thrown at the car and lost control.
It was the latest incident in rising violence in the Indian-administered region of Kashmir, after the death on Friday of well-known separatist Burhan Wani.
The 22-year-old was killed during a gun battle with the Indian army, igniting the worst violence in years.
The region, claimed by India and Pakistan, has been a tinder box for decades between the two countries.
Mosque loudspeakers blared separatist rhetoric calling for jihad and stirring up tensions between the two groups. Clashes between security forces and protesters over the weekend caused six deaths on Saturday and five deaths on Sunday.
