Ten hurt when roller coaster derails in Scotland

MOTHERWELL, Scotland, June 26 (UPI) -- Eight children and two adults were hospitalized Sunday afternoon when a roller coaster derailed at M&D's amusement park in Motherwell, Scotland.

"People were trapped upside down on the ride," Caitlin Barnes, 13, told the BCC.

She had ridden the ride twice with three friends and was standing nearby when it derailed.

"I heard first of all a loud bang," she said. "At first I thought it was part of the ride because it had been a very loud ride the whole day. But when I turned around to look at it I saw the carriage just hurtling to the ground and then it crashed on top of another ride."

"I could see that there was lots of people trapped -- probably up to 10 -- and I saw a girl upside down, stuck," she said.

The Tsunami roller coaster can go at speeds of up to 40 mph through corkscrew turns and loops, according to M&D's website. It's the only inverted roller coaster in Scotland, the website said.

Children under 10 are not allowed on the ride, and those under 14 must be accompanied by an adult.

Witness James Millerick told Sky News: "You heard shrieks from other customers at the theme park."

"When we got there the roller coaster had come off the track entirely. (It) was upside down on the concrete path," he said

The theme park said on its website the venue "is closed until further notice."

In July 2011, nine people were rescued from the Tsunami after a mechanical failure.

In March this year, eight people were rescued from the Tornado rollercoaster when it was stuck 20 feet off the ground.
